3 October Memorial Service 2025
A commemoration of the freedom regained after the Relief of Leiden. With a different guest speaker each year.
Each year on October 3rd we hold a Memorial Service to remember the Relief of Leiden. We commemorate the freedom that was regained in 1574 and contemplate the meaning of freedom today. Throughout the centuries this service has grown into a unique tradition.
Oldest tradition
Directly after the Relief of Leiden the people came to the Pieterskerk Leiden to give thanks. After the siege by the Spanish troops the city was finally liberated. Since 1574 each year a memorial service has been held in the Pieterskerk Leiden on 3 October to commemorate this day. Even during the Second World war the memorial service took place.
Do I have to reserve tickets for the memorial service?
No, the memorial service is accessible free of charge for everyone. It is important to be present on time though, since seating is limited and can quickly be filled on the day.
