Pilgrim Museum

A small museum with a big story

The story of the Mayflower Pilgrims is inextricably linked to Leiden. In the 17th century, they found freedom and a new home here, before embarking on their daring voyage to America.

About the museum

Pilgrim Museum Leiden: a new chapter
The Pilgrim Museum officially closed its doors at the Beschuitsteeg in Leiden on December 21st in 2024. On the 15th of October 2025 the museum will reopen at a remarkable new location: right next to the Pieterskerk. This centuries-old story returns to the heart of the city, where the Pilgrims themselves once gathered.

From Villa Rameau to museum
The monumental building next to the Pieterskerk, originally the sexton’s residence, and later a B&B under the name Villa Rameau, has a new purpose: a museum where people from Leiden — and visitors from all over the world — can explore the history and heritage of the Pilgrims.

The Pilgrims in our  quarter
The Pilgrims arrived in Leiden in 1609 and lived here for almost twelve years. The city was known for its tolerance and freedom, which allowed them to practice their faith without interference. They mostly lived around the Pieterskerk, working as weavers, printers, tobacco sellers, or hatmakers. They gathered to pray in a home near the church, and their minister John Robinson was buried there in 1625.

Traces of Leiden
In 1620, part of the community left Leiden for the New World. After several stops along the English coast, they finally set sail from Plymouth on the Mayflower, founding Plymouth Colony in America.
